Additional requirements
The clause(s) listed below are in addition to the Regulations.
At the end of year 1, an overall average mark of 50 or above is required in the taught component in order to continue in the research phase of the iPhD programme.
Candidates who pass the taught part of the programme but who fail to achieve the standard required to proceed to research for the iPhD may be permitted to undertake supervised research for a Master’s dissertation for the award of the MSc in Oceanography.
Students who have satisfied all the requirements but who do not wish to progress beyond the taught element towards a research degree, may be allowed to transfer to the Master’s level programme – providing they have achieved an overall mark of 50 from the taught element. In this case a dissertation would be required.
There is no formal requirement to undertake a placement but some iPhDs may incorporate an extended placement at the industrial sponsor’s premises or incorporate study periods with an academic partner. Such placements will be subject to the University’s normal risk assessment procedures.
