If you do not achieve the pass mark in up to two modules, but you maintain an overall aggregate of 50% or above, you will be required to retake the assessment for the failed papers as referral assessments. |
A candidate who marginally fails to satisfy the Board of Studies has a right of referral as detailed in the Foundation Year Description. Referral examinations are normally taken in the August/September period. A candidate may not progress to the following year of the programme until referral examinations have been passed. |

If you fail to achieve the qualifying mark in more than two modules, or achieve an overall aggregate of less than 50% you will be required to retake the assessment for all the modules (including any modules where you achieved the pass mark or above). This is known as a “repeat”. You will only be allowed one attempt to repeat the Foundation Year. |
For the purpose of determining referral and repeat rights, failure to achieve the mathematics aggregate will be treated as equivalent to failure in one module. |
If you are asked to refer and you do not achieve the pass mark for any individual module or for the maths average in the referral examination, you have the right to repeat. |
A candidate who fails at referral, or who has no referral right under the regulations, has the right to repeat. A repeat for the Foundation Year consists of taking all examinations again, including any which have already been passed at the first attempt or at referral. |

Candidates will normally be permitted to repeat only at the normal time or times for the examination in the next academic year. A repeat is normally taken externally but a candidate may request, following academic counselling, to take an internal repeat. In this case, full fees will be payable. A candidate may not progress to the following year of the programme until repeat examinations have been passed. |

A candidate permitted to repeat or refer will normally be required to take the papers set for that occasion regardless of any change of syllabus. It is the responsibility of the candidate to ascertain from the Foundation Year Deputy Director in good time whether any such changes have been made. |
