Reference should be made to the University's General Regulations found in Section IV and Section V (Higher Degree Regulations) of the University Calendar.

Except where an opt-out has been granted by the University (see below) the following academic regulations apply in addition to the General Regulations.


1. Admissions
 
1.1 For admission to the programme, students:
  1. must satisfy the General Regulations for Research Degrees with a Major Taught Component;

  2. must satisfy the necessary programme requirements as set out in the programme specification (outlined below).
1.2 Entry requirements
Students for entry to the programme must normally possess a good honours degree in an appropriate specialism.
1.3 Equal opportunities
All individuals are selected and treated on their relative merits and abilities in line with the University's Equal Opportunities Policy. Disabled applicants will be treated according to the same procedure as any other applicant with the added involvement of the Enabling Services Office to assess their needs.


2. Structure of Programme(s)
 
2.1 The General Regulations for Research Degrees with a Major Taught Component apply to this programme. In addition:
2.2 The MPhil (Res Meth) is recognised by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) for the ‘1 + 3’ in the Doctoral Training Centre Education Pathways and comprises twelve taught modules and a dissertation. For the Quantitative Research Methods in Educational Research pathway the 12 modules are specified. For the Mixed Methods in Educational Research pathway there are 5 compulsory modules and 7 optional modules.
2.3 The programme is offered full-time or part-time. Students are required to undertake the study over a period of not less than one year and not more than three years' full-time study, or not less than two years and not more than five years' part-time study.


3. Progression
 
3.1 After having obtained the award, students may transfer to the second year of the EdD programme provided they have satisfactorily completed the core modules of the first year MPhil which are common to both programmes.


4. Assessment
 
4.1 Students are required to successfully complete:
  1. specified assessed coursework in appropriate modules (coursework assignments will total 30,000 words);
  2. an oral examination.
4.2 Students who successfully complete all coursework are eligible to submit a dissertation of approximately 20,000 words.


5. Award of Qualification(s)
 
5.1 The programme follows the General Regulations for Research Degrees with a Major Taught Component.


6. Placements/Study Abroad/Exchange/Fieldwork

7. Other
 
7.1 As a research-led University, we undertake a continuous review of our programmes to ensure quality enhancement and to manage our resources. As a result, these regulations may be revised during a student’s period of registration, however, any revision will be balanced against the requirement that the student should receive the educational service expected. 7.2 Students are required to satisfy the academic and the Attendance and Completion of Programme Requirements as set out in section IV of the University calendar, the programme specification and the programme handbook. Those failing to do so may have their programme terminated (see University Calendar Section IV: Transfer, Suspension, Withdrawal and Termination).
