These regulations are for students starting the following programmes in 2013-14:
BM5 (five year programme)
BM(EU) (five year programme)
and for students who started the following programme from 2012-13:
BM6 (Year 0 widening access programme followed by the five year programme)
and for students who started the following programme from 2014-15:
BM4 (four year graduate entry programme)
and for students on the following programme from 2015-16:

The Faculty has been granted an opt-out by the University’s Academic Standards and Quality Committee(ASQC) to Section IV, General Regulations – Progression, Determination and Classification of Results (see below). The following variations to the University regulations apply:

The definitions used by the Faculty are as per the University regulations with the following additions/exceptions. |
| Year |
The Faculty refers to Years in the following regulations. A Year is equivalent to the term Part as referred to in the University regulations. |
| Repeat |
As per the University definition except BM programme students will normally be required to repeat the year as an internal candidate. |

| Admissions requirements will be as stated in the University’s General Regulations, the Programme Specifications and the University Prospectus. |

Structure of Programme(s) |
| |
The Faculty follows the University General Regulations as laid down in the University Calendar, except where variations have been permitted. The structures of Programmes are as per the University General Regulations and the Programme Specifications. The BM4, BM5, BM(EU), BM6 and International Transfer BM (ITBM) programmes lead to an unclassified degree of Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery.
The BM5 and BM(EU) programmes include an integrated award of an unclassified Honours degree in Medical Sciences for successful completion of all components in BM5 Years 1, 2 and 3.
The BM6 programme includes an integrated award of an unclassified Honours degree in Medical Sciences for successful completion of all modules in Years 0, 1, 2 and 3. |

Progression |

The Faculty of Medicine has been granted an exemption from parts of the University’s regulations as published in the University Calendar Section IV – Progression, Determination and Classification of Results and exceptions to the University’s regulations are detailed below.
All BM Programmes (unless otherwise stated)
Criteria for Progression
University regulation for Progression, Determination and Classification of Results: Undergraduate and Intercalated Masters Programmes 3.1 Progression with the following addition:
Progress from one year of the programme to the next will depend upon the successful completion of the appropriate modules, and freedom from health, behavioural and conduct problems relevant to future employment as a medical practitioner.
University regulation for Progression, Determination and Classification of Results: Undergraduate and Intercalated Masters Programmes 4.1 Referral:
A student who fails to progress under paragraphs 3.1 to 3.3 may take referral assessments in all failed modules.
University regulation for Progression, Determination and Classification of Results: Undergraduate and Intercalated Masters Programmes 5 Repeat:
A candidate failing to progress after referral in Year 1 of the BM4, BM(EU), BM5 or BM6 programme will not be permitted to repeat the Year. Their programme of study will normally be terminated.
Students undertaking Year 0 of the BM6 programme have the right to a referral in the assessment of each failed module but are not normally permitted to repeat Year 0.
University regulation for Progression, Determination and Classification of Results: Undergraduate and Intercalated Masters Programmes 5.3 and 5.4 Repeat:
With the exception of Year 0 and Year 1 (see above), a candidate failing to progress after referral may repeat the appropriate Year of the programme internally. Normally the Repeat will include all modules and marks from any previous attempts will be set aside. Candidates are normally limited to two repeat years during the programme on which they are registered. The maximum duration of a student’s programme of study is therefore normally:

Students who have failed clinical module(s) or the research project module will be required to undertake additional experience during the four weeks available between Years 3 and 4 (between Years 2 and 4 for BM4) or the three weeks available between Years 4 and 5. Students who are required to undertake additional experience in excess of the weeks available will be referred to the Student Progress Committee and may be required to suspend from the programme and return in the following academic session. Detailed arrangements for undertaking additional experience can be found in the programme specification and each module profile. |

Award of Qualification(s) |

The Faculty of Medicine has been granted exemption from Paragraph 7 of the University’s Regulations for Progression, Determination and Classification of Results and operates the following variation.
Bachelor of Medicine
In order to qualify for the degree of Bachelor of Medicine candidates must have passed all modules and have been free from health, behavioural and conduct problems relevant to future employment as a medical practitioner.
Students are eligible for the award of the following exit qualifications if they successfully complete a proportion of the Bachelor of Medicine programme but leave the programme, for whatever reason, before successful completion.

Should a student be permitted to rejoin the BM programme within two years of the award of an exit qualification their exit award would be converted to the appropriate exit award on completion of a later year or the final award if completing the BM programme.
Award of Distinction
The award of a Distinction is conferred on students showing excellence. The criteria defining excellence are detailed the Faculty’s Assessment Policies which are published on Blackboard. |
