Except where an opt-out has been granted by the University (see below) the following academic regulations apply in addition to the General Regulations.

Admissions

Specific entry criteria are detailed in the relevant programme specification. The admissions criteria are:

Successful achievement of the Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing with Registration on the relevant NMC nurse part of the register studied at the University of Southampton according to the curriculum validated in March 2002 and re-approved in March 2007; OR successfully completed the University of Southampton Postgraduate Diploma in Nursing (pre-registration), all fields and as validated in July 2013.
Current registration required with the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

There is no external accreditation for this programme (i.e. NMC recognition), however the achieved learning outcomes will contribute to professional development criteria and will complement the competencies outlined within the NHS Knowledge and Skills Framework.

Registration onto this programme must be within three years of completion of the Postgraduate Diploma.

Structure of Programme(s)

This is a part time programme. The maximum period of registration shall normally be two years. Further detail regarding the programme is set out in the appropriate programme specification.

The programme comprises one compulsory academic module. This is a 30 ECTS module at Level 7.

This, added to the 60 ECTS the students bring to the award from the prerequisite PGDip/RN, make up the MSc Nursing Studies award requiring that students obtain 90 ECTS at level 7.

Progression

Progression Regulations are as described in the University Calendar, Section IV : General Regulations; Progression, Determination and Classification of Results for Standalone Masters Programmes.

Assessment

Assessment of examinations and coursework is in accordance with the University Regulations (see University Calendar, Section IV).

Award of Qualification(s)

Candidates who have satisfied the examiners and who have accumulated the requisite number of credits shall be awarded the qualification for which they have registered in accordance with the University Regulations for Progression, Determination and Classification of Results for Standalone Masters Programmes.

For those who have completed the 2007 programme the classification of award will be calculated in accordance with the University Regulations for a standalone Masters degree and based on the marks achieved for modules 4 to 6 of the Postgraduate Diploma, plus the Dissertation.

For those who have completed the 2013 programme the MSc classification is calculated from the marks in the Level 7 PGDip modules (totalling 45 ECTS), plus the 30 ECTS from the Dissertation. The final placement contributes from the PGDip to the 90 ECTS required for the MSc, but is not included in the classification calculation.
