Last modified July 2014

Reference should be made to the University's General Regulations found in Section IV and Section V (Higher Degree Regulations) of the University Calendar.

Except where an opt-out has been granted by the University, the following academic regulations apply in addition to the General Regulations.

1. Admissions

Candidates for admission must satisfy the Regulations for Admission to Degree Programmes as specified in Section IV of the General Regulations. In addition, the normal requirement for entry to all programmes is a good first degree (first or second class), or equivalent, in a relevant subject from an approved University or institution of higher education. The normal requirement for entry to the programme at undergraduate level is evidence of prior study at HEI level 6, or submission of a piece of work which will be assessed at HEI level 6 by the programme team.

All candidates must satisfy the Programme Leader that they are competent to pursue the programme. Candidates must also be approved by the Faculty of Health Sciences. The right to refuse permission shall be reserved to the Programme Leader.

Candidates may register for one of the following:
  • MSc or PG Diploma
It is possible to claim exemption from some parts of this programme on the basis of prior learning or experience. However students undertaking the programme in preparation for the Low Intensity Worker role may be required to repeat prior learning in order to demonstrate competence to undertake the role in practice.

Candidates will be registered on the Postgraduate Certificate or level 6 trainee Psychological Well-Being Practitioner Southampton Certificate. In exceptional circumstances, the award of Postgraduate Certificate in Mental Health Studies may be awarded if candidates have successfully completed three modules and met their Assessment of Practice competency requirements. However, candidates exiting after only undertaking three modules may not be eligible for Psychological Well-Being Practitioner trained status* (see section 7).

Decisions are based on whether or not the applicant meets the admission criteria, whether the programme can be delivered to the applicant in a way that meets their requirements, making reasonable adjustments if necessary and whether at the end of the programme, the graduate would meet the competencies set by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

Recornition of Prior Learning (RPL)
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) will be considered on a case by case basis in accordance with the University regulations for prior learning.

2. Structure of Programme(s)

The programme structure is as follows:

Postgraduate Certificate: 60 credits (30 ECTS)
3 taught modules, each of 20 credits (10 ECTS) at HE7

Southampton Certificate: 60 credits
3 taught modules of 20 credits at HE6

Students wishing to qualify as Low Intensity Workers according to the National IAPT Guidance will need to complete the four designated IAPT modules (80 credits at HE6 or HE7), unless they have a core profession* (see Section 7).

The programme will be undertaken part time. The minimum and maximum periods of study for the PG Dip in Mental Health Studies (Low Intensity Workers) are as follows:

Part-time: Minimum 1 year Maximum 3 years

The programme may include lectures, seminars, tutorials, practical work, course work, contract learning and projects as specified for individual modules. All modules taken are core.

3. Progression

Progression Regulations are as described in the University Calendar, Section IV : General Regulations: Progression, Determination and Classification of Results. The Faculty of Health Sciences operates a variation of the normal progression regulations for this programme in order to meet PSRB requirements.  These variations are stated below.

In order to progress all modules must be passed at the specified module pass mark. The pass marks are as follows:

Postgraduate Level (Level 7)
  • In all modules the pass mark is 50%
  • Video competency assessments are marked as pass/fail
Undergraduate Level (Level 6)
  • All modules academic work is 40%
  • Video competency assessments are marked as pass/fail
Eleven practice competencies related to each of the modules must be passed in order to complete the programme at all levels and meet the outcomes of the IAPT Low Intensity Worker role.

Failure to meet the required competence will be noted and shared with the employing Trust.

Where a student refers the referral marks will be capped at the module pass mark to calculate the average mark carried forward to determine a final classification.

Any further opportunity for reassessment shall be at the discretion of the relevant Board of Examiners and shall only be granted in exceptional circumstances.

A student who fails a third module at the first attempt will be deemed to have failed the programme and may have their registration terminated. The decision will be made in liaison with the student's employer.

Module Referral
The criteria for module assessment referral are:
  • Failure to achieve a Pass/Fail assessment
  • The minimum pass mark is 40 or 50% (please see above)
Termination of Registration
A student’s registration will normally be terminated following referral assessments if he/she:
  • achieves a mark of 49% or below on a referral attempt at postgraduate level;

  • achieves a mark of 39% or below on a referral attempt at undergraduate level;

  • Fails a Pass/Fail assessment on a referral.

4. Assessment

Each module will be assessed by one or more assignments based on the learning outcomes. All summative assignments across the programme carry credit towards the final outcomes of each module. A range of assessment methods is used to give you an opportunity to benefit from a rounded educational experience.

For all Modules the pass mark is 40% for level 6 students and 50% for level 7, except for the video simulation competency assessments in modules 2 and 4 for which the pass rate is 50% for all students with a pass/fail awarded only.  The pass mark awarded for all successful resubmissions is capped at 40% or 50%.

Failure to submit an assignment at the first attempt within the allocated time and without prior arrangement with the module lead is considered to be a referral at the first attempt.

Each module will be assessed according to the module profile.

Assessments include written assignments, examinations, and a simulated practice OSCE.

Where modules are assessed by more than one assignment, students must achieve a pass in all elements to pass the module. Students will receive constructive feedback for each assignment from the assignment marker(s).

Students will also be required successfully to achieve and complete practice based clinical competencies within four of the six modules. The competencies, which, when completed, demonstrate ‘fitness to practise’ are outlined in the Clinical Competencies document. Students are required to successfully achieve the competencies indicated in this document to comply with the requirements of the programme.

When attending for an examination you must produce either your university ID card or a form of photographic ID in which you are clearly identifiable. Students without photographic ID will not be permitted entry to the examination.

Work submitted up to 5 days after the deadline will be marked as usual.  The final agreed mark is then reduced by the factors detailed in the relevant University Policy: see https://sharepoint.soton.ac.uk/sites/ese/quality_handbook/Handbook/Assessment%20Framework.aspx.

5. Award of Qualification(s)

Candidates who have satisfied the examiners and who have accumulated the requisite number of credits shall be awarded the qualification for which they have registered in accordance with the University Regulations for Progression, Determination and Classification of Results.

6. Placements/Study Abroad/Exchange/Fieldwork
