Reference should be made to the University's General Regulations found in Section IV and Section V (Higher Degree Regulations) of the University Calendar.

Except where an opt-out has been granted by the University (see below) the following academic regulations apply in addition to the General Regulations.


1. Admissions
 
1.1 Admissions Requirements
Students:
  1. must satisfy the Regulations for Admission to Degree Programmes as specified in Section IV of the University Calendar;

  2. must satisfy the necessary programme requirements as set out in the programme specification and outlined in the Southampton Education School website (see http://www.southampton.ac.uk/education/index.page?);

  3. may be required to supply evidence that they have appropriate practical experience in education or in a relevant professional field, the nature and duration of which is subject to approval by the Head of the Southampton Education School.
1.2 Accreditation of prior learning
The programme also considers advanced admission for students with appropriate APEL standing. Where a candidate has completed modules at another place of learning that are considered to be equivalent to a relevant module on this programme, the University may (in accordance with its regulations on credit transfer) permit that candidate to qualify for the degree by following such a course of study and completing such assessments as it shall specify.
1.3 Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS)
Students will need to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check since learning and assessment activities are likely to bring them into contact with children and/or other vulnerable populations.
1.4 Equal Opportunities
All individuals are selected and treated on their relative merits and abilities in line with the University's Equal Opportunities Policy. Disabled applicants will be treated according to the same procedure as any other applicant with the added involvement of the Enabling Services Office to assess their needs.


2. Structure of Programme(s)
 
2.1 Mode of attendance
Students attend on a full-time or part-time basis. Individual programmes may provide opportunities for distance learning or flexible modes of attendance, and details of this can be found in the Programme Specification.
2.2 Duration of Study
A full-time programme will normally last for a minimum period of 12-18 months, while a part-time programme will normally last for a minimum of 24-30 months.
2.3 All modules are credit-rated in accordance with the Credit Accumulation and Transfer Scheme (CATS) as specified in Section IV of the University Calendar.


3. Progression
 
3.1 Progression to Dissertation
In order to progress to the dissertation phase of the degree programme, students must satisfy the regulations governing the Progression, Determination and Classification of Results: Standalone Masters Programmes as set out in Section IV of the University Calendar.

Students who do not complete a dissertation will, subject to the recommendation of the Board of Examiners, exit with a Postgraduate Certificate in Education Studies (60 CATS/30 ECTS) or Postgraduate Diploma (120 CATS/60 ECTS), in line with the requirements set out in the programme specification.
3.2 Progression to second year (for part-time students)
For part-time students progression to the second year will be determined by the Board of Examiners. Students will be permitted to progress to the second year when they have successfully completed the modules required for the first year of the programme. Students who do not complete the required modules may, subject to the recommendation of the Board of Examiners, exit with a Postgraduate Certificate in Educational Studies.
3.3 Transfers to another programme
Transfers to another programme will normally, on the recommendation of the Programme Board, be subject to approval of the Director of Programmes of the Southampton Education School.


4. Assessment
 
The performance of students shall be assessed by the Board of Examiners in accordance with the regulations governing the Progression, Determination and Classification of Results: Standalone Masters Programmes as set out in Section IV of the University Calendar.


5. Award of Qualification(s)
 
Qualifications are awarded according to the regulations governing the Progression, Determination and Classification of Results: Standalone Masters Programmes as set out in Section IV of the University Calendar.


6. Placements/Study Abroad/Exchange/Fieldwork

7. Other
 
7.1 These regulations may be revised during the student's period of registration in accordance with the procedures approved by Senate.
7.2 Students are required to satisfy the academic and the Attendance and Completion of Programme Requirements as set out in section IV of the University calendar, the programme specification and the programme handbook (and are also expected to attend at least 80% of the sessions for each module, except in agreed and/or unavoidable circumstances). Those failing to do so may have their course terminated (see University Calendar Section IV: Transfer, Suspension, Withdrawal and Termination).
