Programme(s) Acoustics and Music
Last modified July 2012

Reference should be made to the University's General Regulations found in Section IV and Section V (Higher Degree Regulations) of the University Calendar.

Except where an opt-out has been granted by the University (see below) the following academic regulations apply in addition to the General Regulations.

1. Admissions

Specific entry criteria are detailed in the Programme Specifications.

2. Structure of Programme(s)

Mode of attendance and duration
The programme is in three Parts where each Part is normally completed in one academic year. The programme is only available on a full time basis.

Structure
Acoustics and Music is a joint honours degree programme organised in collaboration with Music in the Faculty of Humanities. Students choose a portfolio of acoustics and music modules within certain rules which are set out in the Programme Specification. The maximum contribution from either subject under these rules is approximately 75%.

Modules
In Part I core acoustics modules make up 50% of the curriculum and options from acoustic or music modules chosen according to the patterns defined in the programme specification make up the other 60%.  In Part II compulsory acoustics modules make up 3/12ths of the curriculum. In Part III all students must undertake a project which is a core module.

Acoustics modules are listed in the Programme Specification and full details are given in the Module Specifications. Full details of Music modules are available on the Faculty of Humanities website.

Preferences are expressed by students and selections are subject to approval by the Programme Organiser.

3. Progression

Students must normally complete each Part successfully before progressing to the next. A candidate not achieving the required standard may refer according to the regulations set out in the University’s progression rules (section IV of the Calendar).

4. Assessment

Assessment of examinations and coursework is in accordance with University regulations (see University Calendar Section IV).

When students repeat modules externally, it may be impractical for them to undertake the normal assessment activities, for example assessed laboratory or group work. In such cases they  will be provided with an alternative but equivalent form of assessment which will meet the required learning outcomes.

5. Award of Qualification(s)

The final award is awarded by Senate on the recommendation of the Examination Board to candidates who have satisfactorily completed an approved course of study and have satisfied the assessment requirements.

Final awards
The award of BSc (Hons) in Acoustics and Music is available to students who have completed Parts I, II and III satisfactorily. Degree classifications are determined in accordance with University regulations (see University Calendar Section IV).

The awards of CertHE and DipHE are awarded to candidates who have satisfactorily completed Parts I and II respectively.

6. Placements/Study Abroad/Exchange/Fieldwork

None.

7. Other

These regulations may be revised during the student's period of registration in accordance with the procedures approved by Senate.

Candidates are required to satisfy the academic and attendance requirements of the programme as laid out in the Programme Specification and the Student Handbook for the programme. Those failing to do so may have their course terminated.
