Entry requirements
Candidates for entry to the programme must normally possess a Masters degree from an approved University in an appropriate discipline and a minimum of two years’ experience as a professional educator or educational administrator. Other candidates may be admitted to the course on the recommendation of the School. |

Structure of Programme(s) |

2.1 |
Modes of study
The scheme of study will comprise attendance at 8 modules comprising an appropriate mix of taught compulsory and taught elective modules, in research methods and in the specialism (Leadership & Management or Auto/Biographical Studies in Education), and the completion of a research thesis.
All students will be assigned a personal tutor during the coursework phase and a research supervisor who will be responsible for supervision of the student's progress in researching and writing his/her thesis.
Candidates are required to undertake the scheme of study over a period of not less than three years' and not more than five years' full-time study, or not less than four years and not more than six years' part-time study.

Progression |
|
All students will be registered for EdD. At the end of the first year of study students may, rather than continue with their doctoral studies, transfer to the second year of the MPhil in Research Methods upon completion of at least two elective modules on the MPhil Research Methods programme. A student may apply for transfer from EdD to PhD from the beginning of the second year of full-time study or the beginning of the third year of part-time study. |

Assessment |
|
Candidates are required to complete successfully:
- A portfolio of coursework of 30,000 words based on a range of 6 assignments from across the 8 taught modules. Permission to proceed to the thesis stage will be given by the School on the basis of a satisfactory portfolio.
- A research thesis of 45,000 words.
- An oral examination.
Students must attend 80% of each module. Those unable to meet this criterion will be asked to repeat the module(s) concerned. |

5. |
Award of Qualification(s) |

The examiners for each candidate shall recommend one of the following courses of action:
- That a candidate who fails in up to two modules may be referred and re-submit work on those units on one occasion only by a date specified by the School. Failure in more than two modules will lead to termination of course registration.
- That a degree of EdD be awarded subject, if necessary, to minor amendments being made by a date specified.
- That the candidate be permitted to submit by a date specified a revised thesis.
- That the candidate be required to attend a further oral examination.
- That the degree of EdD not be awarded and that re-submission of the theses not be permitted.
- That, in the case of a candidate who has failed to satisfy the requirements for the award of EdD, the degree of MPhil (Research Methodology) be awarded.
The final award is made by Senate on the recommendation of the School to candidates who have satisfactorily completed an approved course of study and have satisfied the assessment requirements.
In the case of a candidate who has failed to satisfy the requirements for the award of EdD or MPhil (Research Methodology), the candidate shall normally be regarded as having failed the examination.

These regulations may be revised during the student's period of registration in accordance with the procedures approved by Senate. Students should comply with the University’s General regulations on attendance. |
