Reference should be made to the University's General Regulations found in Section IV and Section V (Higher Degree Regulations) of the University Calendar.

Except where an opt-out has been granted by the University (see below) the following academic regulations apply in addition to the General Regulations.

1. Admissions
 
Admission to the programme is to Leeds University for the first year of study. Thereafter students may transfer to Southampton or remain registered at Leeds. Students may enter the course in January, April, July or October of any year.

The normal preferred entry requirement is at least a good second class honours degree in an appropriate subject or appropriate professional experience and/or qualifications. Suitable equivalent qualifications would be considered for overseas/mature candidates, and applications are welcomed from those with relevant work experience.

In addition, students must have access to a personal computer at home or work with the following minimum specification:
  • 1.4GHz Pentium-4 processor (or Athlon equivalent)
  • 256MB memory
  • 40GB hard disk
  • 64MB graphics
  • DVD-CD-RW combo drive (ie: DVD reader, CD writer)
  • Dial-up or broadband (preferred)
The remaining parts of these regulations apply to Southampton registered students only. Leeds registered students should refer to that University's regulations.

Where modules completed by a candidate at other places of learning are considered to be equivalent to a relevant module of the programme (in accordance with the University's regulations on credit transfer) the University may permit such a candidate to qualify for the degree by following such a programme of study and completing such examinations as it shall specify.

Disabled applicants will be treated according to the same procedures as any other applicant with the additional involvement of Enabling Services to assess their needs.


2. Structure of Programme(s)
 
The programme is studied part-time and consists of 8 modules and a dissertation. Part 1 consists of 4 core modules; Part 2 consists of 2 core modules related to the stream or specialisation chosen by the student plus 2 further modules from anywhere within the curriculum; Part 3 consists of the dissertation.

3. Progression
 
As per the University's progression regulations.


4. Assessment
 
The programme is assessed entirely through coursework and students are required to submit assignments by 4.45pm UK time (GMT/BST1) on the date the assignment is due. Assignments are assessed according to the University of Southampton's Regulations for Progression, Determination and Classification of Results.

5. Award of Qualification(s)
 

The requirements for qualification for the awards of Master of Science, Postgraduate Diploma and Postgraduate Certificate are as set out in the University of Southampton's Regulations for Progression, Determination and Classification of Results.

Details of the processes for submission of coursework can be found on the relevant Blackboard sites.

Publication of results will occur at 2.00pm on the Friday following the relevant Board of Examiners' meeting or as otherwise indicated in the University Almanac.

The final award is awarded by Senate on the recommendation of the School to candidates who have satisfactorily completed an approved programme of study and have satisfied the assessment requirements.

6. Placements/Study Abroad/Exchange/Fieldwork
 
Not applicable.


7. Other
 
These regulations may be revised during the student's period of registration in accordance with the procedures approved by Senate.

In addition, while in Southampton the following regulation applies:

Candidates are required to satisfy the academic and attendance requirements of the programme as laid out in the Programme Specification and the Student Handbook for the programme. Those failing to do so may have their course terminated.
