Programme(s)	These regulations apply to all undergraduate programmes in the School of Civil Engineering and the Environment (hereafter referred to as “Civil Engineering and the Environment ”)

Reference should be made to the University's General Regulations found in Section IV and Section V (Higher Degree Regulations) of the University Calendar.

Except where an opt-out has been granted by the University (see below) the following academic regulations apply in addition to the General Regulations.

Admissions

The specific admissions criteria for each programme are available at www.soton.ac.uk/civil.

Structure of Programme(s)

2.1	All undergraduate programmes in Civil Engineering and the Environment are full-time degrees.
2.2	Bachelors degrees normally require three years of study. MEng / MEnvSci degrees normally require four years of study.
2.3	Transfer from MEng to the BEng programme is normally permitted up to the last working day in February in Part 3. Transfer from MEnvSci to the BSc programme is normally permitted up to the end of Part 2 to allow registration on the individual project. Students who transfer from an MEng/ MEnvSci programme to a Bachelor programme will not normally be permitted to transfer back to the integrated Masters programmes.
2.4	Transfer from BSc to the MEnvSci programme will be carried out at the end of Part 1. Transfer is subject to fulfilling the criteria of the MEnvSci programme and an interview with the student’s personal tutor or the Programme Director.
2.5	Transfer from BEng to the MEng programme is normally permitted up to the end of the final term of the third year. Transfer is subject to fulfilling the criteria of the MEng programme and an interview with the student’s personal tutor or the Programme Director.
2.6	Students on taught programmes in School are required to register for the correct credit points modules as specified in the Programme Specification. Students may register for additional modules (in addition to the modules you are required to take as core, compulsory or optional modules on your degree programme) providing the total credits in an academic year does not exceed 150 credits. These modules must be selected from outside the School but they will not be used for progression or degree classification purposes and must have the permission of the Programme Director and module co-ordinator. Further details are provided in the Programme Specification.
2.7	Students are required to accumulate the required credits to progress. Any student successfully completing a Part of a programme who for any reason does not wish to proceed may be eligible to receive an exit award as specified in the Programme Specification.
2.8	Core, compulsory and optional modules for all degree programmes are listed in the Programme Specifications. All pre-requisites and assessments are documented in the module specifications. A copy of each Module Specification will be distributed at the beginning of each academic year and can also be viewed at www.soton.ac.uk/civil.
2.9	Where programmes allow a choice of option modules, these must be selected for each semester before the deadline as notified by the School. Completed option forms must be signed by the student and are subject to the approval of the Programme Director.
2.10	It is the responsibility of each student to ensure that the combination of modules they have selected is valid and meets the requirements of their programme of study.
2.11	Students may change their module selection up to the end of week two of the semester. Students changing their selection are responsible for checking that there are no timetable clashes.
2.12	It is the student’s responsibility to submit their project preferences by the deadline to enable project and supervisor allocation.

Progression

3.1	In order to progress to the next Part of the programme, MEng / MEnvSci students who commence their studies with effect from October 2009 are required to obtain an overall aggregate mark of 55% in Part I, 55% in Part II and 55% in Part III.
3.2	The minimum qualifying mark for all modules is 30%.The minimum pass mark for modules is as specified in the relevant Programme Specifications.
3.3	All module and progression requirements outlined in the relevant Programme Specifications must be fully met for an award to be made.

Assessment

4.1

When students repeat modules externally, it may be impractical for them to undertake the normal assessment activities, for example assessed laboratory or group work. In such cases the School will provide an alternative but equivalent form of assessment which will meet the required learning outcomes.

Award of Qualification(s)

Qualifications are awarded according to the University regulations.

Placements/Study Abroad/Exchange/Fieldwork

6.1	Students on the MEng programmes are advised to seek an industrial placement at the end of Parts 2 and 3. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain a placement although Civil and Environmental Engineering will provide guidelines and academic advice.
6.2	All students are required to complete a risk assessment before undertaking as part of their studies any activity that is judged to involve health and safety risks.

Other

7.1	These regulations may be revised during the student's period of registration in accordance with the procedures approved by Senate.
7.2	Candidates are required to satisfy the academic and attendance requirements of the programme as laid out in the Programme Specification. Those failing to do so may have their enrolment on a programme terminated.
