Terms of reference

The Committee ensures that the University has an appropriate framework of health and safety policies and procedures, monitors their implementation and takes positive steps to encourage the development of a proactive and risk-based approach to health and safety across the University.
  1. To review and oversee the implementation of the University's polices for Safety and Occupational Health by:

    1. Proposing health and safety policies, including the general policy and specific policies for identified risks and accompanying guidance on the advice of the Central Health and Safety Group.

    2. Proposing an action plan derived from an annual review of University health and safety performance.

    3. Monitoring the implementation of the Safety Policy and procedures by receiving copies of reports, including performance and audit reports.

    4. Reviewing regularly the effectiveness of existing policies and procedures.

    5. Recommending appropriate action and monitoring targets for continuous improvement.

  2. To contribute towards a culture where health and safety is fully embedded within all working practices by ensuring that, across the University, there is provision for appropriate leadership and resources for health and safety and that a co-ordinated approach is taken towards health and safety issues.

  3. To ensure that the University is meeting legislative requirements.

  4. To advise UEG on current and emerging risks and other matters in the area of health and safety which UEG might request.

  5. To receive and consider reports and recommendations from the Consultative Group for Safety and Occupational Health and the Genetic Modification and Bio-Safety Committee.

  6. To report to the University Executive Group after each meeting of SOHC and to Council as appropriate.
Note: The Statement of the Council's Primary Responsibilities and delegated and related matters specified that SOHC has authority to approve the content of the Health and Safety Policy Manual subject to report, as necessary, to Council.
