Reference should be made to the University's General Regulations found in Section IV and Section V (Higher Degree Regulations) of the University Calendar.

Except where the School has been granted an opt-out by the University (see below) the following academic regulations apply in addition to the General Regulations.

1. Admissions
 
Note: See the individual Programme Regulations for the exceptions to the following:
  1. A candidate must normally be a graduate; a candidate who is not may be admitted to a programme on the approval of the Board of the School of Social Sciences.

  2. A candidate may be required to undertake a period of preliminary study and to pass examinations as specified by the teaching programme concerned before undertaking the scheme of study.

  3. Satisfy the programme requirements appertaining to the relevant degree as specified in the programme specifications.

  4. All individuals are selected and treated on their relative merits and abilities in line with the University’s Equal Opportunities Policy. Disabled applicants will be treated according to the same procedure as any other applicant with the added involvement of the Disability office to assess their needs.


2. Structure of Programme(s)
 
  1. The scheme of study will comprise lectures and other coursework. Provision may also be made for specialised study and options within the scheme of study.

  2. A candidate is required to undertake the scheme of study over a period of not less than two semesters of full-time study or four semesters of part-time study (see individual programmes for exceptions where full-time study only if offered).


3. Progression
 
  1. All components of the scheme of study will be examined during and/or at the end of the period of study as specified by the School.

  2. A candidate who fails initially to satisfy the examiners will normally be permitted to take referred examinations at dates to be specified by the School and, if successful at the appropriate level, be allowed eligibility to proceed to a Master's degree. Students who pass first time at Postgraduate Diploma only level are allowed to retake examinations and, if successful at the appropriate level, will be allowed eligibility to proceed to the Master's degree.


4. Assessment
 
The performance of candidates shall be assessed by the Board of Examiners in accordance with the School’s regulations governing examinations for the relevant programme(s) of study.


5. Award of Qualification(s)
 
The Postgraduate Diploma of the University of Southampton (PGDipSoton) is awarded by Senate to a candidate who has satisfactorily completed the scheme of study and passed the assessment prescribed. The Postgraduate Diploma may be awarded with distinction. A candidate who has qualified for the award of the Postgraduate Diploma at a satisfactory level may, with the approval of the Board of the School of Social Sciences, be permitted to undertake further study and research and to submit a dissertation. In all cases, award of the Postgraduate Diploma shall be withheld pending the outcome under regulations 1 and 2 below.
  1. A candidate who satisfies the examiners in the dissertation shall forego the award of the Postgraduate Diploma and be awarded the degree of Master of Science in the Social Sciences. The degree may be awarded with a distinction.

  2. A candidate who fails to satisfy the examiners in the dissertation may either be awarded the Postgraduate Diploma of the University of Southampton or be permitted by the Board of the School of Social Sciences, on the recommendation of the Head of Teaching Programme, to resubmit a dissertation in a bound form within a period of six calendar months (full-time candidates) or twelve calendar months (part-time candidates).
MSc Citizenship and Governance (Research Methods).
A candidate who fails to reach the required standard following these examinations may, with the permission of the examiners, apply to transfer to the Postgraduate Diploma/MSc in Citizenship and Democracy and be considered for the award of the Postgraduate Diploma in Citizenship and Democracy.

MSc Global Politics (Research Methods)
A candidate who fails to reach the required standard following these examinations may, with the permission of the examiners, apply to transfer to the Postgraduate Diploma/MSc in Global Politics and be considered for the award of the Postgraduate Diploma in Global Politics.

MPhil (Research Methodology)
Candidates who pass all coursework and dissertation will be awarded the degree of MPhil (Research Methodology).

Social Work.
A candidate, who passes all assessments, including designated field-work placements but does not proceed to dissertation, shall be awarded the Postgraduate Diploma of the University of Southampton (PGDipSoton).

Postgraduate Diploma/Msc in Professional Studies.
A candidate who has satisfied the examiners in the dissertation will forego the award of the Postgraduate Diploma and be awarded the degree of Master of Science in the Social Sciences. The degree may be awarded with distinction.

Postgraduate Certificate in Professional Studies
All components of the scheme of study will be assessed during and/or at the end of the period of study. Percentage marks will be awarded according to the standard of work to fit the CATS scheme.


6. Placements/Study Abroad/Exchange/Fieldwork
 
MSc Social Work
Students are required to undertake at least 200 days of directed academic learning and at least 200 days of practice.


7. Other
 
These regulations may be revised during the student's period of registration in accordance with the procedures approved by Senate.

Student handbooks for all programmes are available via the Social Sciences web pages.

In accordance with the university’s regulations on attendance specified in Section IV of the Calendar, student participation in the programme of study will be subject to periodic monitoring.

Social Work
Termination of Programme for Unprofessional Conduct
In cases where the behaviour of a student registered on this programme is considered to be unprofessional, damaging or dangerous to service users, other students or programme providers, or is considered to be unethical or creating unacceptable risk for themselves or others, a recommendation may be made for termination of programme in accordance with procedures set out in the relevant programme student handbook. This procedure may be invoked at any time during the programme when a student's behaviour has been called into question, including either during a practice placement or after practice has been completed or at any time during the academic part of the programme.
