Reference should be made to the University's General Regulations found in Section IV and Section V (Higher Degree Regulations) of the University Calendar.

Except where the School has been granted an out-out by the University (see below) the following academic regulations apply in addition to the General Regulations.

1. Admissions
 
1.1 Applicants for admission must have satisfactorily completed the Diploma in Advanced Studies: Companion Animal Behaviour Counselling gaining 60% average or above overall.
1.2 Progression from the Diploma in Advanced Studies: Companion Animal Behaviour Counselling is by application and is not an automatic right.
1.3 Applications must be within 2 years of completion of the last qualification. Applications will be assessed on merit and priority will be based on grades achieved, approximate project proposal and sufficient supervisory capacity. All project proposals must be approved by the Course Director who will allocate to each student a dissertation supervisor appropriate to the subject of the dissertation.
1.4 The School supports the University's commitment to a comprehensive policy of equal opportunities and cultural diversity. Students are selected solely on the basis of their academic merits and abilities.


2. Structure of Programme(s)
 
2.1 The programme of study is over one year.
2.2 The mode of study is part-time.
2.3 The first assignment is a 500 word research project plan and must be submitted before commencement of the research study so that feedback may be provided.
2.4 The dissertation comprises of a literature review and an original research study.


3. Progression
 
3.1 The maximum period for submission of the dissertation is 12 months.


4. Assessment
 
4.1 Examination shall be by assessment of the research project plan (5% of the total mark) and the dissertation (95% of the total mark).
4.2 Candidates who fail the dissertation may, with the approval of the Board of the School of Psychology, re-submit a dissertation on one occasion only by a date specified by the Board.


5. Award of Qualification(s)
 
5.1 The MSc in Companion Animal Behaviour Counselling is awarded by Senate on the recommendation of the Board of the School of Psychology to candidates who have satisfactorily completed a course of study leading to the Diploma in Advanced Studies: Companion Animal Behaviour Counselling and have completed a dissertation of a maximum of 10,000 words.
5.2 The degree may be awarded with Distinction if a candidate secures a mark of over 70% for the dissertation and an average of over 70% for the Diploma.


6. Placements/Study Abroad/Exchange/Fieldwork
 
Not applicable.


7. Other
 
7.1 Ethics Committee approval and risk assessments must be completed for all research studies.
7.2 These regulations may be revised during the student's period of registration in accordance with procedures approved by Senate.
