Reference should be made to the University's General Regulations found in Section IV and Section V (Higher Degree Regulations) of the University Calendar.
Except where the School has been granted an opt-out by the University (see below) the following academic regulations apply in addition to the General Regulations.

Progression regulations follow the University regulations in the University Calendar Section VII and in addition:
3.1 |
Candidates for the Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma
Candidates achieving the required average and credit point total (ie: 60 for a certificate, 120 for a diploma), but failing to achieve the pass mark in modules totalling not more than 30 of the required credit points will be eligible for the Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma respectively. |
3.2 |
Candidates proceeding to the MSc Project
Compensation for failed modules totalling up to 30 credit points is allowed on the basis of the average mark as follows:

Referral
Referral examinations are taken in modules specified by the Board of Examiners, usually those in which the student has achieved the lowest marks.
Students who fail to achieve the pass mark in any module, following the application of the compensation rules, are required to take examinations in that module, for a maximum of 30 credit points. Students referring against the average are normally required to take examinations in module(s) worth 10 credit points for each 1% their average is below the appropriate requirements, up to a maximum of 30 credit points.
The pass mark for each referral examination is the same as the module pass mark.
The mark achieved in the referral examination, where higher than the original mark, is used in the assessment of a programme exit point, or in determining student progression.
In the event of failure to achieve the required criteria for a programme exit point, after referral procedures have been followed, the normal University regulations apply regarding the right to repeat. If, having exercised this right to repeat, the required criteria for a programme exit point are not achieved the course is terminated. |
3.4 |
Repeat
For an External repeat students are required to sit all requisite examinations during the repeat year. Submission of coursework elements, such as laboratory reports, assignments is optional except those stipulated in the formal letter from the School. It is the student's responsibility to establish if there have been any changes to the content of modules, changes to any coursework and deadlines, examination dates and times. Students taking an External repeat will have their enrolment suspended until the repeat has been successfully completed. Students taking an External repeat are not required to pay tuition fees.
An Internal repeat may be permitted if this is considered to be in that candidate’s best interests. For an Internal repeat students are required to attend all lectures, laboratories, practicals and other sessions and submit all requisite coursework and sit all requisite examinations during the repeat year. Students taking an Internal repeat are required to pay tuition fees.
If there are special circumstances, a Board of Examiners may allow a candidate to repeat as for the first time. |
3.5 |
A candidate may choose to sit a combination of modules that total 125 credits rather than 120 credits. In such circumstances the average across all 125 credits is taken as the mark for the taught element of the programme. |
3.6 |
The School of Engineering Sciences requires MSc dissertations to be marked on a percentage scale not a letter grade scale. |
