Certificate of Higher Education: Counselling (1544)

Regulations

  1. The Certificate will be awarded by Senate on the recommendation of the School Board to candidates who have satisfactorily completed a programme of part-time study, who have satisfied the examination requirements and who have met the minimum 80% attendance requirements for the award.

  2. The period of study will normally extend over two years.

  3. There are no formal academic entrance requirements but applicants must follow the formal admissions procedure which assesses readiness to study at this level and incorporates a selection interview.

  4. The certificate is based on a module structure. Candidates must normally complete modules amounting to 120 CATS credit points at a passing grade (40%) or above in each programme module to be eligible for the award.

  5. Up to 50% of the CATS credits required to be awarded the Certificate may be attained through the transfer of credits or the accreditation of prior learning as approved by the School Board.

  6. Examination will be by assessment of written work, skills practice and such other methods of examination as are approved by the School Board as appropriate to the programme.

  7. Subject to the approval of the School Board, candidates who have been unsuccessful in the examination of any module may normally submit themselves to be re-examined in that module on one occasion only and, if the work meets the required standard, will only gain the minimum University of Southampton pass mark (40%).

  8. All programme modules taken by students in the School are credit-rated in accordance with the principles contained in the CATS Guide and Regulations.

To complete the Certificate you will need to attend all the following programme modules. The programme will normally be studied over 2 academic years part-time but you may take up to 5 years if necessary.

COUN1013 Psychological Models of Counselling (Year 1, Semester 2)
COUN1007 Counselling Theory (Year 1, Semester 2)
COUN1009 Learning, Motivation and Change (Year 2, Semester 1)
COUN1006 Counselling and Human Diversity (Year 2, Semesters 1 & 2)
COUN1012 Counselling Practice (Year 2, Semester 2)
COUN1011 Counselling Project (Year 2, Semester 2)
