Regulations for the Degree of Bachelor of Arts in Education & Training with Qualified Teacher Status
- The degree of Bachelor of Arts in Education and Training (QTS) is awarded by Senate on the recommendation of the Board of the School of Education to candidates who have satisfactorily completed an approved course of study in the School of Education and have satisfied the examination requirements. The degree may be award with Honours or as a Pass degree.
- The Bachelor of Arts in Education and Training (QTS) will be offered as a full-time Honours degree programme and shall extend over two years at third year degree level.
- Applicants for admission to the programme will be required to have completed work equivalent to the first two years of a full-time Honours degree. Qualifications permitting eligibility for entry to the degree include:
- GCSE passes or equivalent at grades A, B or C in English, Mathematics or Science (preferably Double Science);
- Foundation degree in a related subject or at least 220 CATS credits in a related field.
Exceptionally, and subject to the approval of the Programme Board, an applicant possessing other qualifications and experience may be admitted by the Programme Board. All candidates for admission will be interviewed.
- The course comprises 6 modules plus 1 double module. Successful completion of each module will confer 20 credit points at level 3. The double module confers 40 credits at level 3.
- The degree will normally be completed over a minimum of two years and a maximum of four years.
- Candidates will be assessed on the basis of coursework and the practice of education in placement schools. Assessment for each module will be the equivalent of one 4,000 word essay. The double module assessment will be the equivalent to one 8,000 word essay. The assessment of the QTS module will be based on successful completion of school placement and a portfolio of evidence against the QTS standards.
- Candidates will be awarded the Bachelor of Arts in Education and Training (QTS) Honours Degree provided that they satisfy the examiners in all the coursework assignments of all the modules and successfully complete teaching practice and the portfolio of evidence. The degree will be awarded to candidates acquiring a minimum of 120 credit points at level 3.
- Subject to the approval of the Programme Board, candidates who have been unsuccessful in the examination for any one module may present themselves for re-examination in that unit once only. The conditions for the re-examination of each candidate shall be prescribed by the Board.
- A list will be issued showing the names of successful candidates in alphabetical order.
- In extreme cases of trainee teacher misdemeanour on placement, where there is evidence that the presence of a trainee teacher is detrimental to the safety or progress of children or evidence that the teacher has failed to establish effective working relationships with professional colleagues, a recommendation may be made for termination of the trainee teacher's registration on the Bachelor of Arts in Education and Training (QTS) programme in accordance with procedures available from the School of Education.
