University Ethics Committee

Note: The University Ethics Committee reports directly to the University Executive Group.

Terms of reference
  1. To be responsible for keeping under review and monitoring the implementation of the University Ethics Policy, and for sustaining a University-wide awareness of research governanceissues.

  2. To develop policy and guidelines with and for the Schools in relation to ethical and related issues.

  3. To advise School Ethics Committees on procedures or on ethical issues, including concerns that relate to a particular study or other matter and, where necessary, to adjudicate upon such matters.

  4. With the consent of the Head of School involved, to designate particular School Ethics Committees as being responsible institutionally for developing best practice and acting as the lead committee for certain categories of project.

  5. To receive reports from each School Ethics Committee as appropriate, including an annual report.

  6. To ensure that members of UEC and of School Ethics Committees have received, or will receive, appropriate training in ethical matters.

  7. To report to the appropriate bodies within the University.

Membership

  Chair - The Pro Vice-Chancellor with the Research portfolio (or other senior officer to be appointed on the recommendation of the Vice-Chancellor) Professor P A Nelson
  The PVC with the Research portfolio (if not the Chair)  
  The Registrar & Chief Operating Officer (or nominee) Mr S Higman
  The Head of the Research Governance Office Dr M Prude
  A representative of Research and Innovation Services To be advised
  A representative from each Faculty who should normally be a Chair of a School Ethics Committee (nominated by the Dean) To be advised
  A senior academic with relevant experience; for example, in ethics or as a member of a local research ethics committee (LREC) outwith the University, appointed by the Chair of UEC To be advised
  A person not employed by the University (appointed by the Chair of UEC) Professor R Brown
  The President of the Students' Union (or a representative of the Students' Union) Ms A Tanfield
     
  Secretary Mrs G James

Note: At least two members from the group comprising Faculty representatives and a senior academic with experience of an LREC outwith the University should be present at meetings for the Committee to discharge its responsibilities.
