University Calendar 2007/08 Section X : Sources of Financial Assistance for Students |
The University Hardship Fund
The University is prepared to consider applications for financial assistance from overseas students in hardship. To be eligible, students should be in hardship as a result of circumstances beyond their control which have arisen since they registered for their present course of study and which cannot be alleviated in any other way. Awards of up to £500 are normally made to privately-funded, overseas students only. Enquiries may be made to the Students' Union Advice and Information Centre. The Student Loans Scheme The Student Loans Scheme is a government-funded loans scheme introduced under the Education Act (1990) which provides for loans to be made available to UK students. Students should apply to their Local Authority Student Support Office. Further information about Statutory Support can be obtained from the Student Funds Office in the Student Services Centre in Building 37. Bursaries As part of our OFFA agreement, the University is committed to offering minimum level bursary support to students in receipt of full Statutory Support. In addition, the University is offering further bursaries to students where the family income falls below £26,000. This bursary is offered in every year of eligibility where fees of £3,000 are charged. To encourage widening access, the University is also offering 150 local bursaries to UK undergraduate students in their first year of study who are the first generation to attend university and are either living or studying in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. These bursaries are not available to students who are in receipt of an NHS bursary. Further information can be obtained from the Student Funds Office in the Student Services Centre in Building 37. School of Medicine Bursary The School of Medicine is offering 30 bursaries of £1,000 per year to students on the BM6 programme which is aimed at widening access to medicine. Access to Learning Fund The Government provides funds to the University for distribution to UK students in financial hardship, or to encourage students to enter Higher Education who would otherwise be unable to do so. Details may be obtained from the Student Services Centre in Building 37.
