Revised Regulations for Students whose Programmes commenced in September 2003
Following the resolution of Senate on 4 December 2002, there is a minimum pass mark of at least 40% in every subject. This applies to students commencing programmes in 2003-4 who will enter their third year in 2005-6 and their fourth year in 2006-7.
The following regulations apply to these students and will override any existing regulations which are in conflict with them.
Progression Requirements for Part III of all Programmes, Part IV of Undergraduate Masters Programmes, and the fourth year of Double Honours Programmes
- In order to progress to the next Part or year of the Programme, or to graduate as is appropriate, a candidate must achieve:
- at least 40% on aggregate;
- at least 40% in core modules; and
- not more than 30 credit points of modules in which a mark of less than 40% has been awarded.
- A candidate achieving at least 40% on aggregate but not satisfying the above criteria may take referrals in:
- all failed core modules; and
- such other failed modules as the candidate shall, after counselling by the School, choose.
- The module pass mark at referral shall be the same as at the first attempt. A referral candidate may progress if:
- all core modules are passed; and
- not more than 30 credit points of failed modules remain.
- The mark to be carried forward from a referred module to contribute to the degree classification will be calculated using the referral mark (capped at the module pass mark of 40%) or the original mark, whichever is the greater.
- A candidate failing at first attempt and not satisfying the above criteria, or failing at referral, and who has not previously been allowed a resit, may take a resit examination. The modules to be retaken at resit shall be as determined by the Board of Examiners within the range allowed by the programme specification. The marks for the resit modules will be substituted into the examination grid in place of the first attempt marks, where higher. The same rules will then be applied. No referral or further resit will be available.
- Referral arrangements under paragraph 2 above are the responsibility of the School. Schools will endeavour to offer a referral mechanism which will allow final year students to graduate at the normal time, but this cannot be guaranteed.
