Electrical Engineering/Electromechanical Engineering

  • BEng Electrical Engineering
  • MEng Electrical Engineering
  • MEng Electrical Engineering with European Studies
  • BEng Electromechanical Engineering
  • MEng Electromechanical Engineering
  • MEng Electromechanical Engineering with European Studies

The current course structure is given in Appendix I.

You will study 120 credit points equivalent to 12 course units in years 1, 2 amd 3, and 150 credits, or 15 course units, in year 4. These credits are at level C (Certificate) in year 1, level I (Intermediate) in year 2, level H (Honours) in year 3, and level M (Masters) in year 4. In year 4, you are required to take a minimum of 120 credits in level M subject.

There are several degree possibilities in the programme of study:
  • three years full-time leading to a Bachelor of Engineering (BEng);
  • four years full-time leading to a Master of Engineering (MEng).
In addition, a number of exit points are defined:
  • Students who pass Year 1 may exit with a Certificate in Higher Education.
  • Students who pass Year 2 may exit with a Diploma in Higher Education.
  • Students who successfully complete at least 300 credit points, including 60 points in level H taught modules in Year 3, may exit with the Ordinary Degree of Bachelor of Engineering (BEng [Ordinary]).
The main areas covered in the first two years are the core electrical and mechanical topics required by Electrical and Electromechanical engineers. In addition, the Electromechanical Engineering programme has a number of courses taught by the School of Engineering Sciences to broaden the students' learning experience. In years 3 and 4, the core material covers professional practice, with major individual and group projects, and taught modules covering industrial practice and engineering management. There is also a range of optional modules available. Options such as Electrostatics and Robotics and Automation give an overview of a specific topic, while others such as Electrical Machine Dynamics and Power Systems Technology provide students with detailed technical insight into an industrial problem.

If you are studying on the European Studies degree, you wil additionally take foreign language units in the first three years. Apart from contributing to your overall assessment, you must pass the language unit each year in order to study abroad in your fourth year.
