The University of Southampton confirms its commitment to a comprehensive policy of equal opportunities in employment and for students. Individuals are selected and treated on the basis of their relevant merits and abilities and are given equal opportunities within the University. The aim of the policy is to ensure that no job applicant or employee, prospective student or student, should receive less favourable treatment on any grounds which are not relevant to good employment practice for staff or to academic ability and attainment for students. The University has a race equality policy based on four principles:
Racial equality in education and employment through the operation of fair policies and practices
Awareness raising and annual auditing
Consultation and committment to achieving real race equality
Empowerment of all in the University to tackle racial discrimination and harassment
The University will publish an annual report on progress in achieving the actions that form part of its race equality policy. This will be available on the University's website in the Equal Opportunities section www.hr.soton.ac.uk/equalops
All members of staff will be expected to work within the spirit and letter of the University's Equal Opportunities policies.
