1. The University reserves the right at any time to revise its published scales of fees and charges whether in respect of new entrants or of students already on course.

2. The fee for any particular course will be notified on application to the Academic Registrar.

3. Course fees for a session (or part of a session) are payable for the course in two instalments due at the start of each semester. Unless otherwise stated, all other fees, charges and sums payable to the University are to be paid in full within seven days of the date of the invoice or of the date at which they fall due.

4. Outstanding debts for which students are responsible will become liable for penalties as set out in section 16 et seqq. below.

5. No person shall be awarded a degree, diploma or certificate unless he or she has paid the fees prescribed and any other sums due to the University. (Ordinance No.7,4,5).

6. Students in difficulties over settling their debts to the University are urged to discuss them with the Fees Office at the earliest opportunity.

Course Fees 2002/03

7. The fees quoted below, except where otherwise stated, are sessional fees for 2002-03, inclusive of all charges for matriculation, registration, tuition, examination, graduation and where applicable, Students' Union subscription but not fees for re-examination. Admission to a course leads automatically to a liability for fees. A student who for any reason withdraws during the session will be entitled to a refund calculated on a pro rata basis. Details are available upon request to the Fees Office. The fees applicable to visiting students and to students pursuing courses in the affiliated institutions are given in the appropriate sections below.

UK and EU Students

12. Students attending courses but not seeking a qualification of the University will be charged fees to be determined in each case by the Academic Registrar but the following guidelines will apply:
    1. Full-time attendance: UK or overseas full-time fee appropriate to course.
    2. Part-time attendance: UK or overseas part-time fee appropriate to the course.

All Students
The following fees regulations apply to all students, as appropriate.

12. Undergraduate courses:
    1. Re-examination fees:
       Between 1 and 3 examination papers taken on a second or subsequent occasion £40

    2. An administration fee of £400 will be charged to any candidate retaking any examination papers in a centre other than the University of Southampton. This fee is in addition to any fee applicable under (a), above.
    3. All students spending a period of study abroad as part of their course are required to pay the standard sessional fee in respect of that period.

13. Research and instructional courses
    1. Nominal registration fee

Research courses: in addition to the appropriate sessional fee the University may charge a research support fee not exceeding £1240 per annum and not exceeding £1225 per annum for research in clinical disciplines. (UK/EU only: fees for overseas research students are normally inclusive of support fees.)

16. If payment of any sum due (other than a fine) is not received by the University within five weeks of the date of issue of the account (as appropriate), a charge for late payment will be added to the sum due, as set out below, and the student will be informed in writing by the Finance Office.

17. If payment of course fees (including any late payment charge) is not received by the University within eight weeks of the date of issue of the account (as appropriate) the Director of Finance will inform the Academic Registrar. The students concerned will be liable to termination of course with effect from the end of the current term and/or they may be refused examination in accordance with Ordinance No. 7,3,5.

18. If payment of any other debt (including any late payment charge) is not received by the University within eight weeks of the date of issue of the account (as appropriate) the Director of Finance may at his discretion refer the total debt to the University's solicitors or a credit management company for collection. The student concerned will be liable for any charges arising from the referral, including the costs of any court action.

19. Students who are expecting to continue on course into the next session but who have a debt to the University outstanding on 31 July may not be permitted to sit examinations (if any) in the following September and will not be permitted to register for the following session while their debt remains outstanding. The course of such a student will thus effectively be terminated.

Fees for courses at accredited and affiliated institutions

20. Please refer to the individual colleges for details of tuition fees.

Other Fees and Expenses

The following information does not apply to students following courses in affiliated institutions.

Students are responsible for meeting the cost of essential textbooks, and of producing such essays, assignments, laboratory reports and dissertations as are required to fulfil the academic requirements for each programme of study. Some academic departments will make a nominal charge for the provision of essential supplementary material and study guides.

In addition to charging Tuition Fees, as appropriate, the University, under the terms of Section 28 of the Teaching and Higher Education Act 1998, may levy a number of supplementary charges, as listed below.

21. Laboratory Deposits
    At the beginning of their course students reading Chemistry are required to pay a deposit not exceeding £30. This deposit is repaid, less any deductions, during the last two weeks of the course. Deductions from the deposit may be made in respect of practical work, local fieldwork and other similar items of expenditure. Students in the School of Biological Sciences are required to pay at the start of their course a sum of £30 which is not refundable.

22. Hire of Lockers
    A limited number of lockers are available within departments for use by students, who are required to pay a deposit at the beginning of the session. Keys must be returned at the end of each session and upon the return of the key the deposit is refunded to the student.

23. Additional expenses: Undergraduate courses
    
    1. The regulations for some first-degree courses prescribe study courses, excavations, field trips or visits which may take place in term-time or in vacation and may involve residence abroad, and the payment of a contribution towards the associated costs.
    2. The regulations for single and combined honours in Modern Languages prescribe varying periods of residence abroad.
    3. Students taking certain first-degree or certificate courses are required to meet the cost of preparing and typing their dissertations or reports (approx. cost £60).
    4. The University has an approved calculator, which has been over-stamped on the back with the University's dolphin logo, for use in those examinations where a calculator is permitted. This scheme is being phased in from October 2002, and in its first year of operation applies to all new Undergraduate students taking Year 1 examinations. It also applies to continuing students who are taking any Year 1 examinations, as well as to those on postgraduate taught courses. The approved calculator must be purchased from the Student Union Shop on the Highfield campus, or from the shop at New College. The cost will be no more than £10. Please note that a calculator of the same model but without the dolphin logo is not acceptable for use in the examination room.
    5. All students in the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science may be required to obtain drawing instruments, drawing paper, computer disks, certain items of protective clothing and electronic calculators (approx. cost £90).
    6. All students studying Civil and Environmental Engineering are required to pay £180 towards the cost of the survey field course.
    7. All students taking Electronics, Electronic Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical and Electro-mechanical Engineering may be required to equip themselves with tool sets (approx. cost £40).
    8. All students studying Medicine are required to equip themselves with a number of instruments (approximate cost £150); and to pay £60 on annual registration in Years 1 and 2, and £60 thereafter, on a laboratory deposit; to cover the cost of locker keys (£5 returnable on return of locker keys in Years 1 and 2), health screening and a contribution towards the costs of travel.
    9. Students at Winchester School of Art are charged an annual 'studio fee' (maximum £120).
    10. Students taking Ocean and Earth Sciences may be required to obtain basic field equipment and contribute to the costs of field and laboratory materials.
    11. Students taking Social Work Studies may have to contribute to the cost of travel to practical placements.
    12. Students taking English are required to pay an annual fee for photocopying of reading materials.
    13. All students studying Physiotherapy are required to equip themselves with a number of instruments (approx. cost £80).

24. Additional Expenses: Postgraduate courses
    1. All students taking the MSc course in Oceanography must meet the cost of protective clothing and fees for visits to marine stations and institutions (approx. cost £70).
    2. Students taking postgraduate instructional courses are usually required to submit typed and bound dissertations (approx. cost £150).
    3. The University has an approved calculator, which has been over-stamped on the back with the University's dolphin logo, for use in those examinations where a calculator is permitted. This scheme is being phased in from October 2002, and in its first year of operation applies to all new Undergraduate students taking Year 1 examinations.     4. Students studying for higher degrees by research will incur costs for the typing and binding of their theses. These costs may be considerable and will vary according to the nature and length of the work.

Hall Fee Regulations

25. Fees Due
    1. Fee liability becomes due once a place has been accepted.
    2. Students wishing to leave halls will be required to give twelve weeks notice in writing from a Saturday. A student leaving hall will be financially liable for the full period of notice unless the place is taken by another student with the agreement of the Accommodation Officer/Warden.
    3. When a student withdraws or suspends from a course, hall fees are due for 7 days from the date the student vacates his/her place unless 7 days' notice has previously been received.
    4. Full fees are due if a place for the start of session is cancelled less than 10 working days before the start of that session.

26. Fees Remission
    1. Students absent through illness are allowed 75% fee reduction for each complete week the accommodation is vacant, subject to the production of a medical certificate and providing the student is not in hospital.
    2. In certain cases of extreme financial hardship or where there are compassionate grounds some remission may be given.

27. Penalties
    Students who fail to pay residence fees by the due date will be charged at the rate of half per cent (0.5%) per month, calculated daily.

Residence and Lodging Fees 2002/3 (to be reviewed for 2003/4)

1. The fee levels quoted above are for your guidance only.
2. Please use this table in order to determine your preferred choices of Room Code which must be entered on your Residence Application Form.
3. Preferences will be considered as far as possible and where alternatives are offered every effort will be made to attempt to ensure that where possible the type of accommodation and the fee level are comparable to those of your preferred options.
4. Students accommodated in single rooms without washbasins have access to a shared washbasin facility and to the communal bathrooms shared by all students.
5. Rooms vary in size from Hall to Hall.
6. Fees include the cleaning of communal areas only unless otherwise specified. Fees for self-contained flats do not include cleaning.
7. At present the duration of the contracts for Hartley Grove A Block (186 room for Undergraduates only), K&L blocks Glen Eyre Self Catered Halls (235 rooms for Undergraduates only) and South Hill Hall (190 rooms for Undergraduates only) includes residence during the Christmas Vacation but not during the Easter vacation.
8. Students should note that a room in a University Hall of Residence in Southampton entitles the resident to the uni-link transport package which includes bus travel and free access to bicycle storage at most Halls of Residence and teaching sites. In addition students in all Halls are covered by personal possessions insurance whilst resident in Hall. Insurance cover details will be sent to students with offers of rooms in Hall.
9. Students should note that all University Residences are located in Southampton except Erasmus Park which is located in Winchester. The contract length at Erasmus Park is given for guidance only.

Lodgings Placements
Students resident in lodgings normally pay not more than £80 per week (£65 bed and breakfast weekdays, full board Sundays; £62.50 bed and breakfast only; 49 bed and breakfast Monday to Friday only), according to the accommodation provided; this is paid direct to the lodgings provider. The weekly terms include a non-refundable element to cover the retention of rooms during the Christmas and Easter vacations.
