General Regulations for first-degree Master's courses in the Faculty of Science
- Candidates for admission to the first-degree Master's programme must
- satisfy the Regulations for Admission to Degree Courses as specified in Section IV of the General Regulations;
- have passed the General Certificate of Secondary Education, or an equivalent examination, in Mathematics;
- satisfy the course requirements appertaining to the relevant programme of study.
- All candidates admitted to a first-degree Master's programme shall be registered in an Honours School. Candidates will follow an approved pattern of study extending over four academic years, and based on a unit structure in which they are required to take unit courses equivalent to at least 120 credit points in each year to form a coherent pattern of study.
- The Regulations for the Honours Schools may prescribe for each programme certain units which candidates for that programme are required to take in each year. Apart from the prescribed units (if any) the choice of further optional units shall be subject in all cases to the approval of the candidate's tutor and of the relevant Department.
- To qualify to proceed from one year of the programme to the next candidates must reach a standard in the examinations deemed satisfactory by the Board of the Faculty, including practical examinations and course assessments where these are prescribed. A satisfactory standard must similarly be obtained in the final year of the programme to qualify for the award of the degree of Master.
- In cases where candidates do not obtain a standard in the examinations deemed satisfactory by the Board of the Faculty, the arrangements prescribed under Section 6 of the Regulations for the Degree of Bachelor of Science will apply.
- Candidates who have successfully met all the requirements of the programme will be recommended for the award of the degree of Master. Lists of successful candidates will be issued with names in alphabetical order in each of the following classifications: first class honours, second class honours (upper division), second class honours (lower division), third class honours, and pass.
- The Board of the Faculty may recommend the award of the degree of Bachelor of Science to a candidate who has failed to reach a satisfactory standard in either the third year or final year examinations for the degree of Master.
- In exceptional circumstances the Board of the Faculty may recommend the award of the degree of Bachelor of Science to a candidate who has reached a satisfactory standard in the third-year examinations but who is, for good cause, prevented from proceeding to the fourth year.
- Candidates awarded the degree of Bachelor under Regulations 7 or 8 above shall not be permitted to remain in candidature for the degree of Master.
