Regulations for the Degree of Bachelor of Science or Bachelor of Arts by part-time study
- To qualify for admission to any course leading to Bachelors' degrees a candidate must:
- satisfy the Regulations for Admission to Degree Courses as specified in Section IV of the General Regulations;
- have passed the General Certificate of Education, or an equivalent examination, in Mathematics;
- satisfy the course requirements for the relevant degree course.
- A candidate admitted to a part-time course for the degree of BSc or BA in the Faculty of Science shall be registered in one of the following Honours Schools - Biology, Biochemistry and Physiology, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Geography, Geology, Geophysical Sciences, Oceanography, Physics.
- The course for a BSc or BA by part-time study shall extend over not less than four and not more than eight academic years.
- The course in each Honours School is based on a common unit structure as follows:
- The subjects available in the Faculty are assigned a credit point value. A part-time candidate may register for unit courses with a credit points value of not less than 30 and not more than 75 in each academic year.
- The Regulations for the Honours Schools of the Faculty prescribe certain units which a candidate is required to take. Apart from the prescribed units the choice of options shall be made in consultation with the candidate's tutor and shall be subject in all cases to the approval of the relevant Department or Board of Studies.
- To qualify for the award of an honours degree a part-time candidate must register for units with a total credit points value of at least 360 (which must include the prescribed units) and must satisfy the examiners in units with a total credit points value of at least 300.
- A candidate who does not wish to proceed to an honours degree may qualify for the award of the ordinary degree. Such a candidate must have registered for unit courses with a credit points value of not less than 270 (which must include the prescribed units) and must have satisfied the examiners in units with a total credit points value of at least 240.
- A candidate who fails to satisfy the examiners in a unit will be eligible for re-examination. In the event of failure in the second examination the candidate may, with the approval of the Faculty Board, be allowed to repeat the failed unit.
- With the permission of Senate, on the recommendation of the Faculty Board, part-time students who have attended courses of study or passed examinations at other educational institutions may be allowed to count these courses, up to the equivalent of 60 credit points, towards the requirements for the BSc or BA degree.
- A candidate who qualifies for the award of the ordinary degree of BSc or BA by part-time study may with the permission of the Faculty Board register for one further year of full-time study as a final year candidate for an Honours degree.
