Regulations for the Degree of Bachelor of Nursing (Honours)(October 1997 entry onwards)

1. The pre-registration course leading to the Degree of Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) shall be of four full-time academic years' duration. Branch programmes will be offered in Adult and Childrens Nursing.

2. Candidates for admission to the course must satisfy the Regulations for Admission to Degree Courses as specified in Section IV of the General Regulations as well as the following. Subjects offered must normally include at GCSE/'O' Level, 'AS' Level or 'A' Level: Biology, Mathematics, English Language; and a third science subject, normally Chemistry, Physical Science or Combined Science, three subjects having been passed at 'A' Level (or equivalent) to include two at grade C and one at B. Admission to and continuation on the course is subject to specific status and health requirements. Students are required to inform the Head of School of health or other problems relevant to their education and training or employment as a health professional.

3. In order to qualify for the Degree of Bachelor of Nursing (Hons) candidates must have: satisfied the entry requirements; followed the four year nursing curriculum; passed all the required assessments and examinations; completed satisfactorily all practical work, clinical work and other coursework as required; fulfilled all English National Board requirements; and acquired 360 credits at the required levels.

4. Normally, progress from one part of the course to the next will depend upon the successful completion of the appropriate examination and coursework requirements and the satisfactory completion of clinical and other practical work. Candidates are permitted two attempts at each examination; further attempts are not normally permitted.

5. The Common Foundation Programme (CFP) shall extend over the first and second years of the nursing curriculum and shall comprise a total of sixteen units. The first year equates to 120 credits at Level 1; the second year to 120 credits at Level 2.

6. The Adult and Child branch programmes shall extend over the third and fourth years of the nursing curriculum and shall comprise of a total of fourteen units, approximately 50% of the time being practice and 50% theory. 50 credits at Level 3 will be awarded at the end of the third year and a further 70 credits at Level 3 at the end of the fourth year.

7. In each year students shall be examined by means of in-course assessments, clinical assessments and formal examinations. All assessments from the beginning of the programmes, including the research focused project in the final year, shall contribute to the final examination result.

8. A candidate who fails to satisfy the Examiners at the end of an Assessment Part will normally be re-examined within three months. Failure at re-examination will normally result in a recommendation for termination of the course.

9. The Degree of Bachelor of Nursing (Honours) will be awarded to successful candidates as follows: First Class, Second Class (upper division), Second Class (lower division) and Third Class.
