University of Southampton Institute of Transducer Technology (USITT)
Following an initiative from industry, USITT was established in 1986 to act as a focus for research into the design and application of transducers. The Institute has the following specific aims:
- To undertake research into the development and production of more accurate, reliable and cost effective sensors and actuators.
- To organise and manage the diverse disciplines which are required for transducer development, so the University can contribute effectively to industry.
- To provide a pool of expertise and a source of data on transducers which can be made available to both manufacturers and users.
- To provide instruction in the design and applications of transducers and to disseminate knowledge of new developments in this area of technology through newsletters, short-courses and regular colloquia.
Institute staff will contribute to the teaching, postgraduate research and academic affairs of the University. Some of the running costs of USITT are met by external organisations who wish to be closely involved with the activities of the Institute. Some of these external organisations are represented on the external Advisory Board of the Institute.
