- 1.1 Appointment of the Chancellor

- The Chancellor of the University shall be appointed (or re-appointed) by the Court on the nomination of the Council. The Council shall not make any nomination (or re-nomination) without having considered a report from a committee charged with responsibility for seeking a suitable person for the office of Chancellor.
- The Chancellor shall be appointed for a term of five years and be eligible for re-appointment, but shall not normally hold office for periods in excess of ten years.

1.2 Appointment of the Pro-Chancellors
- The Pro-Chancellors of the University shall be appointed (or re-appointed) by the Council after consideration of a report from a committee charged with responsibility for seeking a suitable person for the office of Pro-Chancellor. The Council shall not approve any initial appointment recommended by this committee until the Senate has been given the opportunity to comment on it.
- 1.3 Appointment of the Deputy Vice-Chancellors

- The Deputy Vice-Chancellors shall be appointed by the Council, after consideration of a report from the Senate, from among the Professors of the University or those members of the academic staff holding (or having held) the office of Dean of a Faculty in the University.
- The arrangements for the tenure of office by the Deputy Vice-Chancellors shall be: an initial appointment for a normal period of three years, with the possibility of reappointment for a second period of one, two or three further years.
- One of the Deputy Vice-Chancellors shall act for the Vice-Chancellor during his or her absence or during a vacancy in that office.
- The Deputy Vice-Chancellors shall assist the Vice-Chancellor in such matters as the Vice-Chancellor may from time to time decide.
- 1.4 Appointment of the Deans of the Faculties

- The Dean of each Faculty shall be appointed by the Council from among the Professors, Readers and Senior Lecturers in the Faculty, for periods not exceeding five years at a time, after consideration of a report from the Senate and the Board of the Faculty concerned.
- The Dean of each Faculty shall be eligible for re-appointment.
- If the office of Dean becomes vacant before expiry of the period prescribed by the Council, arrangements shall be put in hand to appoint a new Dean in accordance with these provisions.
- During any such vacancy and pending the appointment of a new Dean, the Board of the Faculty may appoint an acting Dean from among the Professors, Readers and Senior Lecturers of the Faculty.
