Regulations for the Postgraduate courses in Integrated Environmental Studies
- The Diploma of the University of Southampton (DipSoton) or the degree of Master of Science (MSc) is awarded by Senate to postgraduate candidates who have satisfactorily completed not less than three terms of full-time study (or 24 months of part-time study) for the degree, and have passed the required examinations.
- The normal requirement for entry to either course shall be a good honours degree in an appropriate engineering or science subject. Candidates with other qualifications approved by the Director of the Integrated Environmental Studies courses may be accepted by the Board of the Faculty of Science.
- The MSc course shall begin in October and consist of three parts: core modules (Part I), specialist modules (Part II) and a research project (Part III). The Diploma course shall consist of Part I and Part II only. Five modules will be taken in each of Parts I and II to form a coherent pattern of study in an environmental discipline. Each student `s choice of modules will require the approval of the Director of the course.
- Candidates will normally be required to present themselves for examination in Part I in January, and in Part II in June, of the year following entry to the course. Satisfactory performance in Part I is required in order to be able to proceed to Part II.
- Candidates for the degree who reach a satisfactory standard in Part II shall continue with full-time supervised study while they undertake a research project. A dissertation on this project must be submitted by 30 September except that in special cases and with the permission of the Director of the course a candidate may submit by a later specified date.
- A candidate who satisfies the examiners in all Parts of the course will be recommended for the award of the degree of Master of Science. A candidate who satisfies the examiners in Parts I and II only will be recommended for the award of the Diploma. Both the degree and the diploma may be awarded with Distinction.
- A candidate who has qualified at the first attempt for the award of the Diploma at a satisfactory level may with the approval of the Board of the Faculty of Science be permitted to undertake a research project and to submit a dissertation by 30 September of the year of qualifying for the award of the Diploma. Such a candidate who satisfies the examiners of the dissertation shall forgo the award of the Diploma and be awarded the degree.
- With the permission of the Board of the Faculty of Science a candidate failing to satisfy the examiners may, on one subsequent occasion, sit a supplementary examination and/or submit a revised dissertation by a date specified by the Director of the course.
