23. The course of study for the degree is in four parts, Parts I, II, III and IV, except for the MEng with the Tripartite Diploma which has an additional fifth part, Part V. Each part extends over one academic year. Parts I and II are common with those of the Bachelor of Engineering and are governed by those Regulations. However, candidates for the degrees of Master of Engineering with European Studies will also offer European Studies in Parts I, II and III and may be granted exemption from one or more Bachelor of Engineering subjects.

24. A candidate admitted to a BEng course but wishing to transfer to the degree of Master of Engineering must normally apply to do so before the beginning of Part II. A candidate on the MEng but wishing to transfer to the BEng may apply at any time up to the end of Part II. A candidate wishing to follow either a Master of Engineering Degree with European Studies, or the five-year Master of Engineering in Electronic Engineering with the Tripartite diploma, must normally apply to do so at no later than the start of Part I.

25. A candidate initially admitted to a BEng course must demonstrate good academic performance in Part I and Part II in order to transfer to a MEng course.

26. A candidate initially admitted to a MEng course must demonstrate good academic performance in Part I and Part II in order to continue on the MEng course. A candidate not doing so may choose either to resit for the MEng under Regulation 9 above, or, if his or her performance has met the requirements for the BEng course in the appropriate discipline, to transfer to that course. A MEng candidate failing at the first attempt in any examination to reach the standard prescribed for the BEng course will be permitted to resit or to take referrals only for the BEng course.

27. Performance in the Part II and Part III examinations contributes to the Part IV examination.

28. The award of the degree of Master of Engineering will depend upon a candidate's performance in Parts II, III and IV and reports on projects. A candidate's performance in projects and in the preparation of reports will be significant factors in assessing a candidate's degree classification and divisions: First Class, Second Class (upper division), Second Class (lower division), and Third Class. Candidates who have not acquitted themselves so as to deserve Honours may, on the recommendation of the examiners, be awarded a pass degree.

29. A list of successful candidates for the degree of Master of Engineering will be issued with the full names in alphabetical order arranged in the following classes: First Class, Second Class (upper division), Second Class (lower division), and Third Class.

30. The award of an honours degree to a student who has retaken either the Part III or IV examination will be at the discretion of the Faculty Board.

31. The Board of the Faculty may recommend the award of the degree of Bachelor of Engineering to a candidate who has failed to reach a satisfactory standard in either the Part III or the Part IV examinations for the degree of Master of Engineering, the class of the degree of Bachelor of Engineering not normally being higher than lower second class honours.

32. In exceptional circumstances the Board of the Faculty may recommend the award of the degree of Bachelor of Engineering to a candidate who has reached a satisfactory standard in the Part III examinations but who is, for good cause, prevented from proceeding to Part IV.

33. A candidate awarded the degree of Bachelor of Engineering under Regulations 32 or 33 above shall not be permitted to remain in candidature for the degree of Master of Engineering.

Regulations for all degrees of Master of Engineering except Electronics and Computer Engineering

34. Subject to Regulation 9 above, a candidate will not normally be allowed to proceed to Parts III or IV unless he or she has demonstrated industrial motivation by passing a selection board during his or her Part II year and has written confirmation of arrangements for industrial periods as required by Regulation 36.

35. A candidate will normally be required to spend a minimum of twenty weeks of the vacations in industry and hence is normally required to undertake two industrial periods in the long vacations preceding the third and fourth years of the course.

36. A candidate is required to attend such workshop courses as may be arranged unless given specific exemption by the Head of School/Department or provide written evidence of equivalent alternative training.

Regulations specific to the degree of Master of Engineering in Electronic Engineering with the Tripartite Diploma

37. A candidate is required to demonstrate an acceptable command of French and German to enable full participation in studies abroad in the fourth and fifth years. A candidate who cannot reach this standard by the end of Part III will be transferred to the MEng.

38. A candidate who satisfactorily completes the fifth year will be awarded the MEng in Electronic Engineering by the University of Southampton and the Tripartite Diploma by the University of Southampton, Ecole Supirieure d'Inginieus en Electrotechnique et Electronique and Universitdt Karlsruhe. A candidate who has reached a satisfactory standard at the end of Part IV but who is, for good cause, prevented from proceeding to Part V, may be recommended for the award of the degree of Master of Engineering in Electronic Engineering.

Additional regulations specific to the degrees of Master of Engineering with European Studies

39. A candidate is required, by the end of Part II, to demonstrate an acceptable command of spoken French or German, or such other languages as Faculty Board may approve, to enable full participation in Europe in Part IV. A candidate is also normally required to demonstrate good academic performance in the European Studies component of Part I in order to proceed to Part II, and of Part II in order to proceed to Part III. A candidate unable to meet these requirements, subject to Regulation 9, will not normally be allowed to continue on the MEng with European Studies, but may transfer either to the BEng or the MEng course subject to Faculty Board approval.

40. A candidate must normally spend the second of the two ten-week industrial placements as required by Regulation 36, in a European country, according to their chosen language.

Additional regulation specific to the degrees of Master of Engineering in Electronics and Computer Engineering

41. A candidate will be encouraged to obtain industrial sponsorship but this will not be mandatory.
