1. The Degree of EngD may be awarded by the Senate to postgraduate students who have successfully pursued a course of study as prescribed below to the satisfaction of the Faculty Board and have fulfilled any other University requirements.

2. The standard entry requirement is a good degree from an approved university in a relevant discipline. Candidates with other qualifications or relevant industrial experience may be accepted by the Faculty Board. All students must have an industrial sponsor. Candidates who apply independently will have to be successfully matched to a sponsoring company for the duration of the course.

Structure, Content and Assessment

3. Candidates shall be required to follow a four-year programme comprising taught modules, individual projects, group project and a written thesis. A viva examination will normally be required.

4. Years 1 and 2 - Candidates shall normally take modules taught by the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science and the Department of Management.

5. Candidates shall also undertake individual projects at the University and in the sponsoring company. A summary of these projects shall be submitted at the end of Year 2.

6. Years 3 and 4 - Candidates shall work together on a Group Multidisciplinary Design Project (GMDP) for the first three months of Year 3 and produce a written report and give an oral presentation.

   Candidates shall then continue work on a project, normally within the sponsoring company, leading to the submission of a thesis and complete portfolio of the work undertaken during the four-year period. A formal viva examination will normally be held at the end of Year 4. Candidates may, exceptionally, be allowed to submit their thesis and complete their course during their fourth year.

Examinations and Assessment

6. Years 1 and 2 - Candidates must show satisfactory performance at the end of Year 1 in order to progress to Year 2. Any candidate with an aggregate below the pass mark at the end of Year 1 will not normally be allowed to continue to Year 2 but will have the right to resit Year 1 on one occasion only.

7. At end of Year 2 - Candidates must show satisfactory performance in all modules, summary of projects and presentation, and the recommendations of the academic and industrial supervisors shall be considered.

8. At the end of Year 2 the examiners will recommend one of the following:
   1. that the candidate be deemed to have qualified for the award of the Diploma in Engineering Management (DipEngMan) or the Master of Research (MRes), but be permitted to continue in candidature for the degree of Doctor of Engineering (EngD)
   2. that the degree of Master of Research (MRes) be awarded and the candidate be not permitted to proceed to candidature for the degree of Doctor of Engineering (EngD)
   3. that the Diploma in Engineering Management (DipEngMan) be awarded and the candidate be not permitted to proceed to candidature for the degree of Doctor of Engineering (EngD)
   4. that the candidate's course be terminated and no award made
   5. that the candidate shall have a resit right for the modules taken in Year 2 providing all other work is deemed satisfactory.

9. Thesis and final award - candidates shall submit a thesis and complete portfolio by a specified date, normally, no later than the end of Year 4. If the examiners are satisfied, the degree of Doctor of Engineering will be recommended.

   There shall be no classification of the degree.

10. If the EngD is not awarded and the relevant qualifications have been attained, the MRes or the DipEngMan shall be awarded. If the EngD is awarded, the eligibility for the MRes or DipEngMan shall lapse.
