General Regulations for the Degree of Master of Mathematics by Full-Time Study
  1. All candidates admitted to the course for the degree of Master of Mathematics (MMath) in the Faculty shall be candidates for an honours degree and must:
    1. satisfy the Regulations for Admission to Degree Courses as specified in Section IV of the General Regulations;
    2. satisfy the appropriate course requirements;
    3. satisfy the requirements of the industrial partner involved in employment placements for the MMath (Industrial Applied Mathematics).

  2. The course of study for the degree of MMath is four years.

  3. The following degree courses are offered:
    MMath
    MMath (Industrial Applied Mathematics)

  4. Candidates are normally required to achieve an average of upper second class honours standard over the best 6 MA level 2 papers in Part II examinations. A candidate not achieving this level may choose either to resit the full part II examination for the MMath under Regulation 6(b) above, or, if his/her performance has met the requirement for a BSc course, may transfer to that course. An MMath candidate failing to achieve the standard prescribed for the BSc courses will be permitted to resit or to take referrals only for a BSc course.

  5. A candidate must satisfy the examiners in Part III examinations in order to remain in candidature for the degree of MMath.

  6. Candidates who have successfully met all the requirements of their course will be recommended for the award of the degree of MMath. The classification of the degree will depend upon a candidate's performance in Parts III and IV. Candidates who do not attain the standard required for honours may be awarded a pass degree. A list of successful candidates will be issued with the names arranged in the following classes: first class, second class (upper division), second class (lower division), third class, pass. Candidates placed in the first, second and third classes shall be awarded an honours degree. Within each class and division the names will be arranged in alphabetical order.

  7. The following procedures shall apply in cases where candidates do not obtain the required standard in examinations (see also Regulations 25 above and 29 below):
    1. a candidate who fails to satisfy the examiners in part of the examinations held during the first or second year of the course may be referred for re-examination in the following Supplementary Examinations. In the event of failure in the referred subjects, the candidate may resit all the papers at the normal time of the examination held in the following year normally as an internal student;
    2. a candidate who fails to satisfy the examiners in the examinations held during the second, third or fourth years of the course may resit all the papers at the normal time of the examinations held in the following year subject to (d) below;
    3. a candidate shall normally be permitted to resit on one occasion only during the full course. Further resits may be allowed at the discretion of the Board of the Faculty;
    4. a candidate resitting at the normal time of the examinations held in the following year shall usually be required to take the papers set for that occasion regardless of any change of syllabus.

  8. A candidate on the MMath (Industrial Applied Mathematics) who satisfies the examiners in Part III but who fails to complete the required work placement satisfactorily as deemed by the industrial partner, will be required to transfer to another degree programme. There is no opportunity to repeat a work placement which is unsatisfactory.

  9. The Board of the Faculty may recommend the award of the degree of BSc to a MMath candidate who has failed to reach a satisfactory standard in the Part IV examination.

  10. A candidate who has failed to reach a satisfactory standard in the Part III examinations for the degree of MMath, may be recommended for the award of the degree of BSc based on performance in Parts II and III examinations.

  11. In exceptional circumstances the Board of the Faculty may recommend the award of the degree of BSc to a candidate who has reached a satisfactory standard in the Part III examinations but who is, for good cause, prevented from proceeding to Part IV.

  12. Candidates awarded the degree of BSc under Regulations 30, 31 or 32 above will not be permitted to remain in candidature for the degree of MMath.

Course Regulations for MMath

  1. Course requirements
    Passes in three subjects at GCE Advanced level including an approved Mathematics subject. The Board of the Faculty may admit candidates with other qualifications.

  2. Course structure
    The MMath course consists of 32 units, eight to be taken in each year of study. Units are offered at levels 1, 2, 3 or 4 with the level coinciding notionally with the year of study. In each year at least six of the eight units must be at or above the corresponding notional level. A profile is required of at least 20 MA units in the final three years of the course. The full-year project is equivalent to two units. Compulsory units are shown in the Schedule below. Remaining units are optional and must be selected in consultation with tutors.

  3. Examination
    Each unit is normally examined at the end of the semester in which it is given; some units may include coursework assessment which takes place during the session.

  4. Practical requirements Candidates undertaking a project in the fourth year of study or selecting units involving the use of computing facilities may be required to attend the University for part of one or more vacations.
