Section 19: The Senate
- Subject to paragraph (2) below the Senate shall consist of the following: [amended 12/12/01]
- The Vice-Chancellor.
- The Deputy Vice-Chancellors.
- The Deans of the Faculties and the Director of New College.
- The Heads of those Schools designated by Ordinance for the purpose.
- The Heads of Academic Departments, other than those within Schools referred to in paragraph (d) above.
- Members of the Academic Staff of the University to be elected by the members of each Faculty and of New College from among their own number upon such terms and conditions of tenure of office and to such number as may be prescribed by Ordinance. The Ordinance shall also prescribe what persons are deemed to be members of each Faculty and of New College for this purpose and shall prescribe the manner of electing.
- The Director of Academic Support Services.
- The Librarian.
- The Director of Computing Services.
- The Director and Heads of the four Research Divisions of the Southampton Oceanography Centre.
- One member elected from among their own number by the Deputy Librarian, the Sub-Librarians and the Assistant Librarians upon such terms and conditions of tenure of office as may be prescribed by Ordinance.
- The Chairs of such of the Senate's Committees as the Senate may from time to time determine who are not already members of the Senate by virtue of any of the other provisions of this Section.
- The Principals of such of the institutions affiliated to the University as Senate shall designate from time to time.
- Five registered full-time students of the University of whom:
- one shall be the President of the Union of Students.
- one shall be the holder for the time being of such elected office in the Union of Students as the Senate may from time to time determine on the recommendation of the Union.
- three shall be elected annually by the Union of Students.
The five student members shall not participate in nor receive papers for any business affecting the appointment promotion or personal affairs of individual
members of staff of the University or affecting the admission academic assessment or personal affairs of individual students.
- Where as the result of an election other than a casual election under paragraph (1)(f) above the sum of the Professors elected thereby together with the members specified in paragraphs (1)(a), (b), (c), (d), (e), (g), (h), (i) and (j) above falls short of a majority of ten members of the Senate by any particular number that number of Professors shall then be elected in a manner and upon such terms and conditions of tenure of office as may be prescribed by Ordinance.
